Halloween Cold Case Murder Challenge

Part Three: The Lizzie Borden Case

Part One · Part Two

THE FINAL VERDICT: TWO MURDERS, THREE WOMEN, AND THE SHADOW OF FAMILY CONFLICT

By Erin Light | Cosmic Clocks — Forensic & Evolutionary Astrology

On August 4, 1892, Andrew and Abby Borden were brutally murdered inside their home in Fall River, Massachusetts.

More than 130 years later, the murders remain unsolved.

Lizzie Borden was tried and acquitted in 1893. Yet her acquittal did not end the questions surrounding the family, the circumstances of the murders, or the possibility that someone knew more than they revealed.

In Parts One and Two, we examined the historical timeline, the natal charts of Lizzie, Emma, and Abby, their psychological dynamics, and the planetary transits occurring on the morning of the murders.

Now we bring those elements together.

Was there a confrontation between Lizzie and Abby?

Could an intruder have entered the residence undetected?

Was one individual responsible for both murders, or could more than one person have been involved?

And could someone have possessed knowledge of the events without physically participating?

These are the questions we will explore in the final installment of this Cosmic Clocks investigation.

The birth times used in this investigation are provisional rectifications. Consequently, house placements and Ascendants are interpretive hypotheses rather than verified historical facts. Astrology offers a symbolic framework for examining psychological themes; it cannot establish criminal responsibility.

CARD ONE — THE POSSIBLE CONFRONTATION BETWEEN ABBY AND LIZZIE

One of the longstanding questions surrounding the Borden murders concerns the relationship between Lizzie and her stepmother, Abby.

Historical accounts describe tensions involving family property, inheritance, and the daughters’ relationship with Andrew’s second wife.

These circumstances have contributed to theories involving resentment, financial insecurity, and conflict over household authority.

But did an argument occur on the morning of August 4?

There is no established historical evidence proving that a confrontation between Abby and Lizzie immediately preceded the first murder.

Nevertheless, their proposed natal charts offer a symbolic framework for examining how disagreements might have been experienced.

LIZZIE’S NATAL PSYCHOLOGY

Cancer Sun | Leo Moon | Scorpio Ascendant

Lizzie’s Cancer Sun emphasizes emotional security, family identity, and the need for belonging.

Her Leo Moon introduces themes of pride, recognition, dignity, and personal expression.

Saturn in Leo may symbolize restrictions involving independence, authority, and self-expression.

Her proposed Scorpio Ascendant adds themes of privacy, emotional intensity, and sensitivity to power dynamics.

Within evolutionary astrology, this combination can be explored through questions about emotional dependence, autonomy, and the struggle to establish personal authority.

ABBY’S NATAL PSYCHOLOGY

Aquarius Sun | Aries Moon | Virgo Ascendant

Abby’s Aquarius Sun symbolizes independence, personal principles, and individuality.

Her Aries Moon is closely conjunct Pluto in the proposed eighth house.

The Moon–Pluto conjunction may symbolize emotionally intense experiences involving control, vulnerability, and shared resources.

Her Virgo Ascendant introduces themes of daily responsibilities, organization, and practical expectations.

These two charts suggest different symbolic approaches to emotional security and household authority.

Lizzie’s chart emphasizes recognition and emotional belonging.

Abby’s emphasizes independence, practical responsibilities, and questions of shared resources.

These differences could be explored as possible sources of interpersonal tension, but they cannot establish that either woman behaved aggressively.

THE MURDER-DAY TRANSITS

Using the planetary positions identified in this investigation for August 4, 1892:

Transiting Sun at approximately 12° Leo was conjunct Lizzie’s natal Moon at approximately 13° Leo.

Transiting Mars at approximately 12° Aquarius opposed Lizzie’s natal Moon.

Transiting Mercury at approximately 8° Virgo was conjunct Abby’s proposed Ascendant at approximately 9° Virgo.

The Sun–Mars opposition across Lizzie’s Moon provides a notable symbolic emphasis on emotional reactions, assertion, and personal identity.

Mercury near Abby’s proposed Ascendant emphasizes communication and immediate circumstances.

Could these patterns reflect an emotionally charged encounter?

Or might they symbolize the extraordinary events that unfolded that morning?

The astrology cannot establish whether an argument occurred.

CARD TWO — EMMA BORDEN: THE SHADOW PARTICIPANT THEORY

Emma Borden’s position within the family introduces another dimension to the investigation.

As Lizzie’s older sister, Emma shared a family history involving their father, stepmother, household expectations, and financial dependence.

Her proposed natal chart contains a particularly interesting configuration.

EMMA’S NATAL PSYCHOLOGY

Pisces Sun | Aquarius Moon | Leo Ascendant

Emma’s Mercury and Mars are conjunct at approximately 17° Aquarius in her proposed seventh house.

Mercury represents thought, communication, information, and interpretation.

Mars represents initiative, assertion, and confrontation.

The seventh house concerns partnerships, close relationships, disagreements, and direct interactions with others.

Together, these placements can symbolize strong convictions, direct communication, and a readiness to defend personal boundaries.

THE SYNASTRY BETWEEN EMMA AND LIZZIE

Emma’s Mercury–Mars conjunction at approximately 17° Aquarius opposes Lizzie’s Moon at approximately 13° Leo.

It also opposes Lizzie’s Mercury at approximately 22° Leo.

This creates an Aquarius–Leo relationship involving emotional expression, communication, assertion, and personal identity.

Lizzie’s Leo placements may emphasize the personal and emotional meaning of family disagreements.

Emma’s Aquarius placements may emphasize principles, independence, and intellectual responses.

The opposition could represent tension, but it could also indicate complementary perspectives and mutual loyalty.

THE TRANSIT ACTIVATION

On August 4, 1892, transiting Mars at approximately 12° Aquarius approached Emma’s natal Mercury–Mars conjunction.

At the same time, it opposed Lizzie’s natal Moon.

Transiting Sun at approximately 12° Leo was conjunct Lizzie’s Moon and near Emma’s proposed Ascendant.

This creates a symbolic connection between the sisters’ natal synastry and the planetary activity on the day of the murders.

But what does this connection actually represent?

EMMA’S ALIBI — THE HISTORICAL EVIDENCE

At the time of the murders, Emma was reportedly staying with Mrs. Brownell and her daughter in Fairhaven, Massachusetts.

She had been visiting for approximately two weeks.

Emma confirmed this arrangement during her testimony at Lizzie’s 1893 trial. Contemporary newspaper reporting also identified the Brownell household and discussed Emma’s visit.

Following the murders, Emma was notified by telegram and returned to Fall River that evening.

These accounts provide substantial support for Emma’s reported absence from the Borden residence.

One question remains.

Was Emma’s location independently verified throughout the entire morning of August 4?

The historical material examined for this investigation does not establish a continuous, minute-by-minute record of her movements.

Although travel between Fairhaven and Fall River was possible, the suggestion that Emma secretly returned, participated in the murders, and traveled back without detection would require evidence that has not been established.

Her reported stay with the Brownells and her return following notification make direct physical involvement a considerably less persuasive theory.

However, her chart remains relevant to understanding the family’s psychological dynamics.

URANUS AND THE FOURTH HOUSE — THE FAMILY TRAGEDY

Emma’s proposed chart places transiting Uranus in Scorpio in her fourth house.

The fourth house represents home, family, ancestry, and emotional foundations.

In evolutionary astrology, Uranus transiting this house can symbolize profound disruption involving family structures and established relationships.

The South Node also occupies this area of her proposed chart.

Within a karmic interpretation, the South Node can symbolize inherited patterns, family history, and unresolved themes.

The combination invites consideration of a sudden event that permanently altered Emma’s family circumstances.

But there is an essential distinction.

An event can be symbolically reflected in someone’s astrological chart without that individual having caused or participated in it.

Emma’s family was devastated by two murders.

Regardless of where she was physically located, those events profoundly affected her life.

Her chart may therefore reflect the experience of a family tragedy rather than involvement in the crime itself.

THE SILENT WITNESS — COULD SOMEONE HAVE KNOWN MORE?

Emma’s Mercury–Mars conjunction introduces another investigative question.

Mercury symbolizes communication, information, and knowledge.

Mars symbolizes action and confrontation.

With transiting Mars approaching Emma’s natal Mercury–Mars conjunction, could the configuration symbolize information or conversations connected with the family conflict?

Was Emma simply aware of longstanding tensions within the household?

Could someone have known more about the circumstances surrounding the murders than was publicly revealed?

Or does the configuration reflect Emma receiving devastating news about her family?

These possibilities cannot be distinguished through astrology alone.

There is no established historical evidence that Emma possessed advance knowledge of the murders.

Nevertheless, the distinction between physical participation, prior knowledge, and awareness of family tensions is worth considering.

Emma may have understood the emotional environment within the Borden household without anticipating the violence that occurred.

Her chart invites questions about communication and family relationships, but it does not answer them.

CARD THREE — THE INTRUDER THEORY: ONE KILLER OR MORE THAN ONE?

Could an outsider have entered the Borden residence and murdered Andrew and Abby Borden?

Or do the circumstances suggest that someone within the household was involved?

The intruder theory remains one of the enduring questions surrounding the murders.

In forensic astrology, the seventh house traditionally represents partnerships, direct relationships, and open adversaries.

Mars symbolizes confrontation, assertion, and aggression.

Uranus is associated with disruption, unpredictability, and sudden change.

Comparing the proposed seventh-house configurations of Abby, Lizzie, and Emma introduces some intriguing differences.

ABBY BORDEN — THE VICTIM’S SEVENTH HOUSE

In Abby’s proposed natal chart, Pisces occupies the seventh-house cusp, with no natal planets occupying that house.

Pisces is traditionally ruled by Jupiter and, in modern astrology, associated with Neptune.

An empty seventh house does not eliminate the possibility of an outside adversary.

The house ruler, planetary aspects, and transits must also be considered.

Nevertheless, Abby’s seventh-house configuration raises an interesting question within this investigation.

If an outsider was responsible, what additional astrological indicators might support that interpretation?

And how does Abby’s configuration compare with the planetary activity appearing in Lizzie’s and Emma’s charts?

LIZZIE BORDEN — URANUS AND THE SEVENTH HOUSE

Lizzie’s proposed natal chart presents a different configuration.

Natal Uranus sits at approximately 10° Gemini in her seventh house.

On August 4, 1892, transiting Pluto at approximately 9° Gemini and Neptune at approximately 10° Gemini were closely conjunct her natal Uranus.

Within evolutionary astrology, this combination can symbolize profound changes involving relationships, power, uncertainty, and unexpected circumstances.

Gemini introduces themes of duality, communication, and multiple perspectives.

Could this symbolism suggest the involvement of more than one individual?

Or might it reflect the extraordinary circumstances that would eventually place Lizzie at the centre of one of America’s most famous murder trials?

Another important configuration involves transiting Mars at approximately 12° Aquarius, forming a trine to Lizzie’s natal Uranus.

Meanwhile, transiting Uranus and the South Node occupied her proposed twelfth house, traditionally associated with hidden circumstances and matters that remain unresolved.

Together, these configurations create an intriguing symbolic relationship between confrontation, interpersonal relationships, and concealed information.

However, none establishes that Lizzie committed a crime or that multiple perpetrators were involved.

EMMA BORDEN — MARS AND THE FAMILY CONNECTION

Emma’s proposed chart introduces another dimension.

Her natal Mercury and Mars are conjunct at approximately 17° Aquarius in her seventh house.

On the morning of the murders, transiting Mars at approximately 12° Aquarius was approaching this conjunction.

At the same time, transiting Uranus occupied her proposed fourth house of home, family, and ancestral foundations.

This configuration could symbolize a profound disruption involving family relationships.

Yet Emma was reportedly staying with the Brownell family in Fairhaven when the murders occurred.

Her chart therefore illustrates an essential principle of this investigation: an event may have enormous consequences for an individual without that person having caused or participated in it.

Emma’s planetary configurations could symbolize the family tragedy itself and its lasting impact on her life.

THE QUESTION OF MULTIPLE PARTICIPANTS

The comparison raises several possibilities.

Was a single individual responsible for both murders?

Could more than one person have participated?

Could one person have acted while another possessed knowledge of the events?

Or do these planetary configurations simply reflect the different ways a devastating family tragedy affected the individuals connected to it?

The symbolism of Gemini and Uranus may invite questions about multiple individuals or unexpected developments, but astrology cannot establish the number of perpetrators.

WHAT WOULD MODERN FORENSICS REVEAL?

The investigation occurred in 1892, long before modern DNA profiling and contemporary forensic techniques.

Today, investigators might examine biological evidence, bloodstain patterns, trace materials, and other physical evidence using methods unavailable to nineteenth-century detectives.

Would these techniques have strengthened the case against Lizzie?

Could they have identified another suspect?

Or might they have provided evidence supporting her innocence?

We cannot know.

Lizzie was acquitted in 1893, and the murders remain unsolved.

The historical evidence must remain the foundation of the investigation.

Astrology offers an additional symbolic perspective, not proof of criminal responsibility.

CARD FOUR — BRIDGET SULLIVAN AND THE HOUSEHOLD WITNESS QUESTION

Bridget Sullivan, the Borden family’s domestic servant, was present at the residence during portions of the morning.

Her testimony is essential to understanding the household’s movements and routines.

One of the details from my original astrological investigation was Abby’s natal Venus in Aquarius in the sixth house.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF VENUS IN THE SIXTH HOUSE

The sixth house traditionally governs service, daily work, employees, servants, and household routines.

Venus symbolizes harmony, cooperation, diplomacy, goodwill, and pleasant relationships.

In Abby’s proposed natal chart, Venus in the sixth house can suggest a preference for cooperative working relationships.

This raised an interesting possibility in my original analysis.

Could Abby have enjoyed a relatively harmonious relationship with Bridget?

Could the placement indicate goodwill between Abby and the person responsible for much of the household’s daily work?

This was one reason I placed less astrological emphasis on Bridget as a potential suspect.

However, Venus in the sixth house cannot establish that their relationship was positive, nor can it prove Bridget’s innocence.

The placement is best understood as a symbolic consideration that must be compared with historical testimony.

THE WITNESS QUESTION

Bridget’s account of the morning remains an important part of the case.

Where was she during the relevant periods?

What did she hear?

What movements could she observe?

And what opportunities existed for someone to move through the residence without attracting attention?

These questions are more useful than attempting to infer guilt or innocence from an astrological placement.

CARD FIVE — THE MOVEMENT TIMELINE

The murders occurred in different rooms and at different times.

Abby was killed in the upstairs guest bedroom, generally estimated during the period between approximately 9:00 and 10:30 AM.

Andrew was killed downstairs after returning home, with his death commonly placed around 10:45 to 11:10 AM.

The interval between the murders remains central to the investigation.

THE SINGLE-PERPETRATOR THEORY

If one individual committed both murders, that person needed an opportunity to move between the locations and remain undetected.

This theory requires careful examination of access, timing, witness testimony, and physical evidence.

THE MULTIPLE-PERPETRATOR THEORY

If more than one person participated, investigators would need evidence of coordination, opportunity, and involvement.

The natal synastry between Lizzie and Emma cannot establish such coordination.

THE POSSIBILITY OF PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

Another possibility is that one individual committed the murders while another possessed information about the circumstances.

This does not necessarily imply advance knowledge or participation.

Someone might have been aware of family tensions without knowing that violence would occur.

Alternatively, someone might have learned information afterward that was never disclosed.

These possibilities remain speculative without supporting historical evidence.

THE INTRUDER THEORY

If an outsider committed the murders, that individual needed access to the house and an opportunity to escape.

The physical layout of the residence, the timing of the killings, and the movements of household members remain essential to evaluating this explanation.

THE ASTROLOGICAL TIMELINE

The planetary configurations identified for approximately 9:30 AM on August 4, 1892, include:

Transiting Sun at approximately 12° Leo conjunct Lizzie’s natal Moon.

Transiting Mars at approximately 12° Aquarius opposite Lizzie’s natal Moon.

Transiting Mars approaching Emma’s natal Mercury–Mars conjunction.

Transiting Mercury at approximately 8° Virgo conjunct Abby’s proposed Ascendant.

Transiting Pluto and Neptune closely conjunct Lizzie’s proposed seventh-house Uranus.

Transiting Uranus occupying the proposed fourth house in Emma’s chart and the twelfth house in Lizzie’s chart.

These contacts provide symbolic themes involving emotional identity, assertion, communication, family disruption, and interpersonal relationships.

However, they do not identify who moved through the house or what actions occurred.

CARD SIX — THE FINAL ASTROLOGICAL VERDICT

After examining the natal charts, family relationships, murder-day transits, and historical timeline, several patterns stand out.

FIRST: LIZZIE’S EMOTIONAL ACTIVATION

The transiting Sun–Mars opposition closely aligned with Lizzie’s natal Moon.

In evolutionary astrology, this can symbolize heightened emotional themes involving independence, recognition, and personal security.

It does not establish violent behavior.

SECOND: LIZZIE’S SEVENTH-HOUSE ACTIVATION

Lizzie’s proposed seventh-house Uranus received close contacts from transiting Pluto and Neptune.

This configuration introduces symbolic themes involving sudden changes, relationships, uncertainty, and transformation.

The Gemini emphasis may invite questions about multiple perspectives or individuals, but it cannot establish that more than one person participated in the murders.

THIRD: EMMA’S MERCURY–MARS ACTIVATION

Transiting Mars approached Emma’s natal Mercury–Mars conjunction in Aquarius.

This activation becomes particularly interesting because Emma’s conjunction also opposes Lizzie’s natal Moon.

It provides a symbolic connection between the sisters’ charts.

But Emma’s documented absence from Fall River must remain central to any assessment of her possible involvement.

The configuration could reflect communication, awareness of family tensions, or the devastating news she received following the murders.

It does not establish prior knowledge.

FOURTH: EMMA’S FOURTH-HOUSE URANUS

Transiting Uranus occupied Emma’s proposed fourth house of home and family.

This provides a symbolic framework for understanding the profound disruption of her family structure.

It also illustrates why planetary transits associated with a tragic event may appear in the charts of relatives who had no involvement in causing it.

FIFTH: ABBY’S EIGHTH-HOUSE THEMES

Abby’s Moon–Pluto conjunction in Aries falls in her proposed eighth house.

This placement emphasizes symbolic themes of shared resources, financial dependence, vulnerability, and transformation.

These themes are relevant to the broader family circumstances.

SIXTH: ABBY’S SIXTH-HOUSE VENUS

Venus in Abby’s sixth house introduces the possibility of cooperative relationships involving domestic service.

This was part of my original astrological reasoning for considering Bridget Sullivan a less compelling suspect.

It remains an interpretive hypothesis rather than proof.

SEVENTH: THE HISTORICAL LIMITATIONS

Emma’s reported absence from Fall River must be considered when evaluating any theory of her physical involvement.

Lizzie’s acquittal must also be respected.

The limitations of nineteenth-century forensic science leave questions that modern investigative methods might have helped answer.

But no astrological configuration can establish that a person committed murder.

THE FINAL CONCLUSION

The most striking feature of this investigation is the concentration of planetary activity involving the Aquarius–Leo axis connecting Lizzie and Emma, together with Lizzie’s proposed seventh-house Uranus.

The murder-day Sun and Mars formed a symbolic opposition involving Lizzie’s natal Moon and Emma’s natal Mercury–Mars conjunction.

Transiting Pluto and Neptune closely contacted Lizzie’s seventh-house Uranus, introducing additional themes involving relationships, uncertainty, and profound change.

Abby’s chart introduces themes involving inheritance, vulnerability, family authority, and domestic working relationships.

Emma’s chart emphasizes the disruption of family foundations and the possibility of significant communication-related themes.

Together, these configurations provide a symbolic framework for examining the relationships within the Borden household.

But an important distinction must remain.

A tragic event can appear symbolically in the astrological charts of multiple family members without implying that those individuals caused or participated in the event.

That principle is particularly relevant to genealogical and evolutionary astrology.

Family members can experience the consequences of the same event in profoundly different ways.

The astrology may invite questions about psychological patterns, family dynamics, and unresolved circumstances.

It cannot establish criminal responsibility.

The historical record provides the facts we can investigate.

Astrology offers a symbolic language for examining the psychological themes surrounding those facts.

And the mystery continues.

CLOSING REFLECTION

The Borden case reminds us that family relationships can contain layers of emotional complexity that outsiders never fully understand.

Behind the appearance of a respectable household may exist competing needs for independence, belonging, recognition, and control.

Those tensions do not necessarily lead to violence.

But they can shape the emotional environment in which individuals live.

In this investigation, the natal charts and murder-day transits reveal intriguing symbolic relationships.

They invite further questions about family dynamics, psychological patterns, and the limits of what we can know about events that occurred more than a century ago.

Was Lizzie responsible?

Did an intruder escape detection?

Could more than one person have been involved?

Or did someone possess information that never became part of the historical record?

The evidence has never provided a universally accepted answer.

The ultimate question remains:

WHO REALLY KILLED ANDREW AND ABBY BORDEN?

The reader must decide which explanation they find most persuasive.
